Don't you love me any more, or something?

This was John's remark when I did these drawings of him.

If I didn't tell you it was meant to be him you might not think they were so awful, and I think there is a little bit of Burl in there.

The pics of Philip are really sad!! Cath I need some tips!!
The one with the cat in it is a much older one (younger John and Pkrp, though his face was never that full)

Well, they're all completely recognisable, fond and tender - esp. the profile of John, and him sleeping. Philip looks a bit stricken, or as if he's ingested something nasty in the last one, but that's what happens in these candid sketches - the reason BFG gets worried! - Tell them the reason why we try and draw them is 'cos we love them, and if they loved us, they'll forgive us our crap ones. One day the masterpieces will emerge, with practice...

It is very enjoyable to see these. The expressions and poses are so familiar. PKRP with his foot up like that. It's a window into life at VPP's house. My youngest SLH doesn't even know I've put my sketches of him on my blog! (And I think it needs to stay way. Although he's not as easily recognizable as yours are! Lucky for him!) This is all very encouraging! I must go and buy myself a new pen.

Oh nobody knows they are up for inspection on the Net!!!
Good thing is - no one would ever recognise them.

re-ho to make 'em smile == oh the fine art of flattery in the mug's game...

one of the many tricks of the hacks is to pay particular attention to the end of the lips, where they finish - there is an-ever-so-faint line that either goes up or down (try smiling yourself & feel the jawl muscles pulling this line up). so in cutsy hack works one of the tricks is to score in a light line to goes upwards at 45 °

another thing for 'happiness' portraits is to try & cut down on the number of lines, which frequently get read as wrinkles by non-arty folk.

Bruce Mcevoy at hhtp://macevoy.blogspot.com is teaching himself portraiture & is well worth following.

anyway, the best advice as always is to 'keep on smiling' :)

Thanks Adam... I will try that and will also look at the Bruce blog.We have all been smiling here as we have had a family get together for my birthday! Anything read as a wrinkle on a portrait of me probably is!
