Cabbage and Friends - Virtual Sketch Date for August

Here is the finished version of my cabbage with its friends in situ. Thank you to Sheri for the challenging photo. I've really enjoyed doing this. My painting has lost some freshness from the first draft, but I do like the funkiness of the warmer pinks, and that masking fluid seemed a bit obvious.
It is Saturday morning in Australia, but I have just realised my blog entries are dates according to USA time somewhere. So I am way ahead of the deadline. That is a first!

I liked the white in the unfinished version, but this one is even better: that cobalt violet is so pretty and complements the greens perfectly. I also love how you handled the yellowy-green stems ... This is really a beautiful work! I'd like to use it as my desktop for awhile--if it's okay with you--so I can look at it some more!!

This is so beautiful, really quite breathtaking - you must frame it! I've put it on my desktop too - it's stretched it out widthways, but I can enjoy the soft muted colours (yet SO colourful) and varied forms and shapes - excellent work 10/10!

Wow they saved it on their desktop. Kudos to you. Very good job. I really like the pinks and the bottome leaf is gorgeous.

I blush, ornamental cabbage-like, at the thought of being on such august desk tops. Thank you Laura and Cathy, and thank you Jeanneg too. Lovely to visit your blog!

Wonderful to see the progression to the finished product! I agree with Laura - I liked the white bits too, but the pink even more. As you say VP, it adds warmth to the picture.
Definitely worthy of a frame and a special spot on the wall. Your kids are going to vie for this one.
Beautiful!

OK. I was wrong. In the last post, I said leave the whites.

Covering up the whites with all that skill...I was wrong :)

Vivienne, this is just gorgeous.

Vivienne, I admit, I'm envious with your use of masking fluid. I don't think you lost any of the freshness, and I am wondering how you avoid the dark lines of paint that gather along the edges of the fluid. I have said many times that I am going to give masking fluid up for good. But it manages to seduce me with the promise that this time it will be different. It lies.

Your colors are beautiful and I like that you were brave enough to not crop and how well you made that background work. Nicely done!

I can't add anything more to these comments - I'll just sit and look at it for a while!

This is just lovely, Vivienne. Your work and the work of other participants is such fun to see and to compare! I hope to join you all in the next sketch date. I was out of town for this one.
I really do love this painting!

Hi Vivienne. Just read your comment on Stacy's blog about masking fluid. I very rarely use it--in fact, bought a bottle to do this cabbage but the barely used it; I don't like hard lines it leaves--but, to keep it from glopping on your brush, rub the brush with some dishsoap before using; I've found it works! And the brush cleans up easy too.

Thanks so much for such warm and positive comments, and Laura for the helpful tip. It looks rather anaemic and flat to me after seeing everyone else's great efforts, but that's what's so great about such a forum ...to learn and move on!

Just lovely! You did a wonderful job.

I agree about masking fluid, think I have Issues with it as well, lol.
